Ernest Miller Hemingway (21 July 1899 - 2 July 1961) enjoyed a life of literary triumph set against a backdrop of some of the grandest landscapes in the world. Ernest Hemingway by Verna Kale offers a new, narrative portrait that challenges some long-held assumptions about his life and craft. It re-examines the writer, sportsman, and celebrity through the stages of his long and varied career.
The book traces Hemingway's adventures as a Red Cross volunteer in the First World War, his apprenticeship as an expatriate poet in 1920s Paris, and his navigation of the burgeoning middlebrow fiction market. About the Author
Verna Kale is an Associate Research Professor in English at the Pennsylvania State University and Associate Editor of the Hemingway Letters Project. She is co-editor, with Sandra Spanier and Miriam B. Mandel, of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway Volume 6 (1934-1936), editor of Teaching Hemingway and Gender, and editor of the Norton Library edition of The Sun Also Rises.
