Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Powers and Submissions by Sarah Coakley addresses the paradox at the heart of theological feminism: the tension between worldly 'powers' that suppress human flourishing and the divine 'power' that enables true freedom. The book explores when submission represents false consciousness and when it is an authentic spiritual surrender. Drawing on spiritual practice, philosophical inquiry, and doctrinal analysis, Coakley argues that contemplative practice is essential for genuine liberation and empowerment.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In this book, Sarah Coakley confronts a central paradox of theological feminism—what she terms 'the paradox of power and vulnerability'. Whilst gender theory has in recent years given an increasingly nuanced account of the worldly 'powers' that serve to stifle human flourishing, feminist theology has been loath to acknowledge that form of surrender to divine 'power' which can alone sustain authentic human freedom, and chasten the abusive will to power in both women and men.

But how are the narratives of divine and human 'powers' to be disentangled? When is 'submission' a mark of false consciousness, and when not? Coakley examines this issue through the lens of spiritual practice, philosophical enquiry, and doctrinal analysis, arguing that contemplative practice must be the sustaining matrix of any truly liberative human empowerment.

Powers and Submissions challenges readers to reconsider their understanding of power in a theological framework, encouraging a reevaluation of what true empowerment means within a spiritual context.

  • After Writing
After Writing provides a significant contribution to the growing genre of works that challenges modern and postmodern accounts of Christianity. Catherine Pickstock shows how Platonic philosophy did not assume a primacy of metaphysical presence, as had previously been thought, but rather a primacy of liturgical theory and practice. The author also provides a significant rethinking of Christian understandings of language,...

  • Scripture and Metaphysics
In this major contribution to contemporary theological and philosophical debates, Matthew Levering bridges the gap between scriptural and metaphysical approaches to the triune God. Levering's argument rests upon St. Thomas Aquinas's understanding of theology as contemplative wisdom. • The Promised End
This book brings Christian theology, creative literature, and literary critical theory into dialogue on the theme of "the end".
