War Among Ladies by Eleanor Scott presents the story of Miss Cullen, a teacher facing a dreadful predicament. With just four years until retirement, she finds herself unable to meet the educational standards expected at Besley High School for girls, nor can she control her pupils. Aware that no other school would hire her due to her shortcomings, Miss Cullen is stuck in a difficult situation; being sacked or failing to work until the age of 60 would mean losing her pension. Her only hope lies in hanging on to her current position.

Unfortunately, her poor exam results threaten the standing of the entire school. In an effort to save their own positions, her colleagues launch a campaign against her. Miss Cullen retaliates by involving the school inspector. Amidst this hostile environment, Viola Kennedy, a young new teacher filled with optimism and fresh ideas, arrives at the school. However, she quickly becomes entangled in the conspiracies and swirling resentments.

This quietly devastating novel explores the realities of life for single working women in the 1920s and the systems that failed them.
