The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells follows the story of Moon, who has spent his life hiding his true nature—a shape-shifter able to transform into a winged creature of flight. As an orphan with only vague memories of his own kind, Moon tries to integrate into the tribes of his river valley, achieving mixed success.

Just as Moon is cast out by another adopted tribe, he encounters a shape-shifter like himself. This stranger claims to know exactly what Moon is and promises that Moon will be welcomed into his community. However, what he fails to tell Moon is that his arrival will unsettle the balance of power. Moon's extraordinary lineage holds the key to the colony's survival, threatened by the fearsome Fell.
