Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
After a sudden, devastating loss, Mara escapes her family and drifts into a wealthy coastal town. Alone and mourning, she survives on scraps and night swims, until a job at a local wine store introduces her to Simon, whose loneliness mirrors her own. As their relationship deepens, Mara confronts her desires, past mistakes, and the urge to both build and dismantle her identity.

Tides is a spare, visceral portrayal of a woman nearly overwhelmed by grief and desire, marking the debut of a writer of rare literary talent.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

After a sudden, devastating loss, Mara flees her family and ends up adrift in a wealthy coastal town. Mired in her grief, Mara's first few days are spent alone, surviving on what scraps of food she can find, and swimming at night in the ocean. When her money runs out and the tourist season comes to a close, Mara finds a job in a local wine store and meets its owner, Simon, a man whose loneliness she immediately recognises as a mirror to her own.

As Mara dances around her growing attraction to Simon, she is forced to reckon with both her present desires and her past errors, and with the compulsion she feels to both make and unmake herself.

Tides is a spare, visceral portrait of a woman nearly pulled under by loss and desire. It is an unforgettable introduction to a debut writer of uncommon literary power.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised as brilliant, elegant and unsparing, Tides is lauded for its lyrical meditation on selfhood and the shifting interior landscapes of a woman adrift (Emma Cline). It is described as a marvel—both lyrical and suspenseful (Jonathan Dee), and an astonishingly moving, taut debut that explores grief and renewal in a thrilling, visceral manner (Stacey D'Erasmo). The book is commended for its emotional accuracy and careful, brave honesty, capturing the beauty and terror of being alive with others (Jennifer Tseng).
