Three Demons by Sanki Saito delves into the complexities of avant-garde artistry and the innovative rebellion against traditional literary norms. This work exemplifies the spirit of change, celebrating new forms while respecting classical elements.

"As a testament to his maverick reputation, he was imprisoned in 1940 during the government's World War II persecution of avant-garde artists, and was officially forbidden to write, being deemed especially pernicious for his perversion of traditional literary forms," states Ryan C. K. Choi.

Sanki Saito's body of work, which resists simple summary, maintains the classical moraic rules and kireji (punctuative expressions). The seasonal references (kigo) in his writing are neither religiously heeded nor scrupulously avoided. Instead of crafting stand-alone pieces, Saito preferred thematic sequences, creating a continuous narrative woven through his unique style.
