About the Author

Lauren Fleshman has been a runner since she was 13 years old and 78 pounds of scrawny, scrappy tomboy. A top high school recruit out of California, Lauren went on to win five NCAA titles and 15 All-American honors while at Stanford. In her 12 years as a pro she won USA championships and international competitions, represented Team USA many times, and finished as high as 7th in the world amid many years of injuries and setbacks. Lauren is passionate about the pursuit of embodied performance, authenticity, and courageously creating your own definitions of success as a pathway to joy through sport. She is married to pro triathlete Jesse Thomas, and they are the proud parents of Jude and Zadie. They live and train in Bend, Oregon, where their performance bar company, Picky Bars, is based.

Risn McGettigan-Dumas grew up running the beaches, trails, and roads of Wicklow, Ireland. She left home for a chance to compete in track and cross-country at Providence College, where she was a four-time All-American. In 2008 Ro represented Ireland in the 3K steeplechase at the Olympics. She was awarded the bronze medal in the 1500 meters at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships and still holds the Irish record for the indoor mile. While she's retired from running competitively, Ro remains invested in the sport as an entrepreneur and certified sports psychology consultant in Providence, Rhode Island, where she lives, trains, and juggles family life with her husband, Myles, and daughters, Hope and Ava.
