Roddy Doyle has been praised for his ability to capture the complex inner life of a battered housewife, likening her experience to those depicted in classic European novels. The novel's portrayal of a Dublin suburb resonates universally, and some consider it Doyle's finest work, surpassing even Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha. Critics describe the story as impassioned, dignified, and richly humane, with an engrossing narrative that compels readers to keep turning the pages.
