Instituting Thought

Three Paradigms of Political Ontology
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
In Instituting Thought, Roberto Esposito confronts the deep crisis facing contemporary politics through a philosophical lens. He critiques two dominant approaches grounded in Heidegger and Deleuze, arguing they remain confined within an inherited political ontology. Instead, Esposito proposes a 'third way' inspired by Claude Lefort, centred on instituting praxis to renew the relationship between politics and ontology. This perspective conceptualises social being as shaped by the tensions of political conflict, offering a fresh and realistic framework for political thought.

"A leading Italian philosopher develops an original perspective on the crisis of contemporary politics"--

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

This new book by the Italian philosopher Roberto Esposito addresses the profound crisis of contemporary politics and examines some of the philosophical approaches that have been used to try to understand and go beyond this crisis. Two approaches have been particularly influential – one indebted to the thought of Martin Heidegger, the other indebted to Gilles Deleuze. While opposed in their political thrust and orientation, both approaches remain trapped within the political ontology that has framed our conceptual language for some time.

In order to move beyond this political ontology, Esposito turns to a third approach that he characterises as ‘instituting thought’. Indebted to the work of the French political philosopher Claude Lefort, this third approach recognises that the road to reconstructing a productive relation between ontology and politics, one that is both realistic and innovative, lies in instituting praxis. Building on this insight, Esposito conceptualises social being as neither univocal nor plurivocal but as cross-cut by the dual semantics of political conflict.

Instituting Thought by one of the most original European philosophers writing today will be of great interest to students and scholars in philosophy, social and political theory and the humanities generally.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Tim Campbell of Cornell University praises Instituting Thought as a vital contribution amidst current political upheavals, highlighting its innovative reimagining of political ontology. He notes Esposito's shift away from Heidegger and Deleuze towards Machiavelli and Lefort, framing the work as a manifesto for revitalising institutions and subjectivation. Campbell calls it Esposito's most significant work since Bios, especially relevant in times of political nihilism and biopolitical challenges.
