Schleiermacher hegte den Traum, dass die Bildung zur Religion die Humanität und das Zusammenleben der Menschen befördert.
Seine Ideen mögen in Anbetracht der Säkularität unseres Zeitalters unzeitgemäß erscheinen, dennoch enthalten sie Anregungen, die Gegenwart in Anbetracht ihrer Herausforderungen zu meistern. Jürgen Habermas hat in seiner Religionsphilosophie die bleibende Bedeutung der Religion anerkannt und spricht darum von Postsäkularität. Die Religion stellt Potenziale der Sinnstiftung und Gemeinschaftsförderung bereit, die auch für säkulare Gemeinwesen hilfreich sind.
