The Darkness by Ragnar Jónasson heralds the Icelandic entry into the world of Nordic Noir, launching the internationally bestselling Dark Iceland series.

Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir of the Reykjavik Police is on the brink of forced early retirement. Given one last opportunity, she is allowed to select a cold case to reinvestigate. She chooses the mysterious death of a young asylum seeker found lifeless on remote, seaweed-coated rocks—a case hastily ruled as a suicide.

As Hulda delves deeper, it becomes evident that multiple young women vanished around the same time, and the complete truth remains elusive. With the investigation under threat from her own police force, Hulda is in a race against time, with only days to unearth the truth, even if it means risking her own life.
