Too Close for Comfort by Pip Smith is the inaugural winner of the Helen Anne Bell Poetry Bequest. This prestigious biennial prize is awarded for a book of poetry by an Australian female poet which engages with Australian culture in some way. The award, along with future awards, has been made possible thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Helen Anne Bell, a former student at the University of Sydney.
The inaugural award in 2013 attracted a highly competitive field of entries. However, the judgesโJoanne Burns, Jill Jones, and myselfโfelt that Pip Smithโs poems were the ones that most robustly and imaginatively engaged with Australian life, concerns, and culture in the 21st century.
From the Foreword by Judith Beveridge.
