Description
The bestselling author of The Hidden Life of Trees partners with his daughter to introduce kids aged 3-7 to the countless ways animals cool down and the importance of forests in hot weather.
It's a hot day—very hot! Piet the squirrel needs to find a good way to cool down, and he can't eat ice cream, like his friend Peter the forester, so he bounds off into the woods to search for another solution.
Soon he meets some other animals and discovers all the ways they keep cool—how wasps spit water into their nests, wild pigs roll in the cool mud, and rabbits hide in their burrows underground. But none of these work for Piet. Just as he's about to give up, he realises he may have found the perfect way after all!
Piet Cools Off brings to life amazing facts about the forest and features:
- Informative side bars that teach readers about the importance of forests and temperature regulation
- Engaging backmatter that explores other ways animals cool down around the world
- A fascinating introduction to learning about animals, nature and forests for younger kids
In this engaging book by bestselling author Peter Wohlleben and Carina Wohlleben, with adorable images by Rachel Qiuqi, readers can discover how animals—and the forest—work hard to stay cool in the hot weather.

His children's books include Can You Hear the Trees Talking?, a young reader's edition of his New York Times bestseller, The Hidden Life of Trees, Do You Know Where the Animals Live?, and the picture book Peter and the Tree Children. He has written many books for adults including The Inner Life of Animals and The Secret Wisdom of Nature. Carina Wohlleben was born in 1991. After studying geography, nature conservation, and landscape ecology, in 2017, she joined the Wohlleben Forest Academy founded by her father, where she leads forest-themed events for children and adults.
Rachel Qiuqi is an illustrator and author passionate about storytelling for children. She started drawing when she was little and has been drawing with the same childlike wonder ever since. Her work is inspiring for kids and grown-ups alike. Her other illustrated books include Fiona the Fruit Bat, written by Dan Riskin, and What Will I Discover?, written by Tanya Lloyd Kyi, both published by Greystone Kids. She was born in Shanghai and now lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Jane Billinghurst's career has been in book publishing in the UK, the US, and Canada, as an editor, publisher, writer, and translator. She is the co-author of Forest Walking and the translator of the international bestseller The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben.
