Avian Surgical Anatomy And Orthopedic Management, 2nd Edition
Book Hero Magic created this recommendation. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! IS THIS YOUR NEXT READ?
As our knowledge of avian anatomy, health and disease progresses, so does the need for improved resources that convey this valuable information. Over time the information contained herein will also need to be expanded and updated. The authors humbly submit this work to the veterinary and scientific community for review and scrutiny.
Avian Surgical Anatomy And Orthopedic Management, 2nd Edition by Susan Orosz, Scott Echols, Patrick Redig draws upon the foundational work of Avian Surgical Anatomy: Thoracic and Pelvic Limbs by Orosz, Ensley and Haynes, published in 1992. That seminal guide has long served as a standard for those performing orthopaedic surgery on birds. While the original work is now out of print, the necessity for a concise source on avian surgical anatomy persists.
In this edition, our aim has been to recapture the musculoskeletal anatomy featured in the original text and to extend its scope. We have included comprehensive coverage of the clinical management of common fractures of the long bones in birds, primarily raptors. These procedures have been refined over two decades by the clinicians at the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota. Additionally, we have incorporated details on the vascular anatomy of the limbs to further inform both surgeons and clinicians.
The class Aves encompasses thousands of species with a multitude of anatomical variations. Although it is impractical to represent every species, this book focuses on birds commonly encountered in private practice and rehabilitation medicine. Featured species include poultry, pigeons, parrots, and birds of prey. Details of the vascular anatomy of the limbs were captured using high-resolution digital computed tomography imaging of the appendicular skeleton in several diverse bird species. These images present a unique comparative perspective that clinicians will find invaluable during surgical procedures.
This newly included information is intended to enhance the reader's understanding of skeletal and vascular anatomy, thereby improving interpretation, reporting, treatment, and educational approaches. Understanding the relationships between musculoskeletal and vascular anatomy is crucial for surgeons aiming to preserve vasculature during complex orthopaedic procedures. We hope this will enrich clinical practice and contribute to the development of effective treatment methods and educational resources for orthopaedic issues in birds.
Since the first edition's publication, significant advancements have been made in avian orthopaedics. This edition offers a comprehensive discussion of orthopaedic conditions and presents clinical management strategies reflecting best practices and current treatment options. The book's title has been updated to encapsulate this expanded information.
As our understanding of avian anatomy, health, and disease evolves, there remains a continual need for improved resources to disseminate this valuable information. The authors humbly submit this work for review and scrutiny by the veterinary and scientific community, hopeful that it will contribute positively to the field of avian care and orthopaedics.
