In uncharted Peru, the holy town of Bedlam stands at the edge of a mysterious forest. Deep within are cinchona trees, whose bark yields the only known treatment for malaria.
In 1859, across the Pacific, India is ravaged by the disease. In desperation, the India Office dispatches the injured expeditionary Merrick Tremayne to Bedlam, under orders to return with cinchona cuttings. But there he meets Raphael, an enigmatic priest who is the key to a secret which will prove more valuable than they could ever have imagined.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
The novel is celebrated as a fast-paced adventure with vibrant characters and engaging historical detail (Independent). Natasha Pulley's prose is delightfully playful and evocative, crafting a vividly imagined setting likened to James Cameronโs Pandora (SFX Magazine). Praised for being magical and hugely imaginative, the story abounds with mystery and adventure, featuring fantastical natural phenomena and cultural richness (Sunday Express, The Times). Pulley is recognised for elegant writing and expert plotting, successfully following her acclaimed debut (Herald).
