Covers the mathematics necessary for biology students to understand, interpret and discuss biological questions. This book integrates mathematics and biology with the use of colour illustrations and photographs to provide an informative approach to the subject of mathematics and statistics within biological science.
Mathematics for Biological Scientists is a comprehensive undergraduate textbook designed to equip biology students with the mathematical skills necessary to understand, interpret, and discuss biological questions effectively.
The book is structured into twelve chapters, organised around four key themes. The first theme introduces basic mathematical concepts as they apply to biology, focusing on biological quantities, processes, and structures. In the second theme, calculus comes into play, extending mathematical language to describe change.
Probability and statistics form the third theme, addressing the uncertainty and variation found in real biological data. The final chapter briefly explores how the 'tools' developed in earlier chapters are applied within biology to create models of biological processes.
Mathematics for Biological Scientists seamlessly integrates mathematics and biology, enhanced by colourful illustrations and photographs. This approach offers an engaging and informative insight into the subject of mathematics and statistics within the realm of biological science.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Reviews praise the book for effectively linking mathematics with biology, making it accessible and engaging for students with varying mathematical backgrounds. It balances detailed content for more advanced students with intuitive explanations for beginners. The use of text and highlight boxes enriches learning and presents the material with the feel of a biological rather than a purely mathematical textbook.
