The movie is based on the acclaimed and groundbreaking Valerian and Laureline comics series created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres published between 1967 and 2010. A fan of the comics since he was 10, Luc Besson hired Mezieres as a concept artist on his Bruce Willis, Mila Jovovich and Gary Oldman starring space opera The Fifth Element, which made $264 million at the box office in 1997. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets continues Luc Besson's sci-fi movies series, following the $463 million box office success of his 2014 Scarlett Johansson starring Lucy.
