Beyond the Ruby Veil tells the story of Emanuela Ragno, a determined young woman who always gets what she wants. Known for her daring mind and socialite schemes, she refuses to conform to the expectations of being a demure young lady. Her latest ambitious move is to marry Alessandro Morandi, her childhood best friend and the heir to the wealthiest house in Occhia. Despite both being gay, Emanuela isn't interested in a love match. She desires power, and through Ale, she plans to obtain it all.

However, Emanuela harbours a secret that could unravel her plans. In Occhia, the sole source of water is the watercrea, a mysterious being who magically converts blood into water. All Occhians are required to surrender themselves to the watercrea to be drained of life once the first bruise-like omen appears on their skin. This sacrificial ritual for the greater good has been followed by everyone throughout history. But not Emanuela, who for years has managed to keep the tiny omen on her hip hidden from the world.

During her wedding ceremony, the watercrea exposes Emanuela, taking her to be sacrificed. In a desperate fight, Emanuela kills the watercrea. Now, Occhia is left without a source to produce their water and without any knowledge of how to acquire more. In a frantic race against time, Emanuela and Ale must venture through the mysterious, blood-red veil surrounding their city. They are tasked with uncovering the secrets of the watercrea's magic and finding a way to save their people, no matter what it takes.

About the Author

Mara Fitzgerald writes YA fantasy about unlikable female characters who ruin everything. She is a biologist by day and spends entirely too much time looking at insects under a microscope. She was born near Disney World and now lives near Graceland, which is almost as good. Beyond the Ruby Veil is her debut novel.
