A Far-flung Life

I absolutely adored The Light between Oceans by M L Stedman so I was very excited to pick up her next book - and it did not disappoint!

This is a sweeping family saga (and I do mean many twists and turns!) centred around the MacBride family who run one of the largest sheep stations in Western Australia. The story begins in the late 60's as we follow the family through unimaginable tragedy and events that change lives forever. This is a story of farming life, of family, loss, and survival - and what people will do to protect the ones they love the most.

Stedman's writing is phenomenal - this is a big book but it reads so brilliantly, you will not want to put it down. A top recommendation for your Easter reading!

The author does a great job of linking the vast landscape of the million-acre sheep station of Meredith Downs to the emotions, memories and ghosts of the McBride family.
There are some very confronting issues uncovered in the first third of this novel. As with her previous novel the author challenges the reader with some harrowing moral dilemmas, which land at the feet of a family of good community standing.
Traumatised by two events that are likely to rip them apart the surviving McBrides must battle storms, droughts, wars, recessions, an intrusive mining company and their own demons to secure their families future.
There is an unlikely romance which blossoms only to prove how spiritually broken people can become from hiding secrets. Can love win out over self imposed moral purgatory?
A great read. If you liked "The Light Between Oceans" you're sure to find this equally as challenging and rewarding. I would now read anything penned by M L Stedman.

Set in remote Western Australia, the MacBride family have lived for generations on Meredith Downs, a vast million-acre sheep station. Over the years the family has weathered everything: storms, wars, droughts, deaths, births, marriages, recessions, booms and busts.

This book should come with a very clear warning. The first half is filled with trauma, and one particular storyline made me viscerally uncomfortable to the point where I seriously considered DNFing it (check for trigger warnings).

In the end, the strength of the writing and the depth of the characters kept me going… and I’m very glad I stayed with it.

The second half opens up into something much richer — a story about life on a remote station, the complicated relationships between the people who live there, the secrets they carry, and the ways generational trauma can echo through a family for decades… but also how it can be broken.

This isn’t always an easy read. But because the author is such a good writer, I went from feeling physically ill to eventually loving these characters (especially Andy, Bonnie, and Pete Peachey!).

Not a comfortable book, but a powerful one.
