Green Valentine
When Astrid and Hiro meet they give each other superhero names. She's Lobster Girl and he's Shopping Trolley Boy. Not an auspicious beginning. But it gets better. Then it gets worse. Much worse. Classic romantic comedy: girl-meets-boy, love blossoms, and is derailed. Incredibly engaging, upbeat, funny and smart.
Short-listed: 2016 Prime Minister's Literary Award, Young Adult Fiction
Green Valentine by Lili Wilkinson introduces readers to Astrid Katy Smythe, a character who embodies beauty, intelligence, and popularity. A straight-A student and a passionate environmental activist, Astrid seems almost perfect.
In stark contrast, Hiro is everything Astrid is not. Slouchy, rude, and filled with resentment, Hiro is intellectually capable but finds no purpose in academics.
Their worlds collide when Astrid, in disguise as a lobster, meets Hiro at the shopping centre where he works managing shopping trolleys. Unaware of her true identity, Hiro does not recognise Astrid, and she chooses not to reveal herself.
While Astrid is driven by a desire to change the world, Hiro is focused on merely surviving it. Despite their differences, they share a common belief that the world needs saving. The question is, can they find enough common ground to address the wrongs between them?
