Rising from modest roots in St. Louis, Gephardt served on the city's Board of Aldermen as the representative from his district. He also served for a decade and a half as leader of House Democrats. He has served on the Board of Directors for several companies, including CenturyLink, Ford Motor Company, and United States Steel. He holds a B.S. from Northwestern University and a J.D. from the University of Michigan.
