One Good Turn
Jackson Brodie, ex-army, ex-police, ex-private detective, is also an innocent bystander - until he becomes a murder suspect. As the body count mounts, each member of the teeming Dickensian cast's story contains a kernel of the next, like a set of nesting Russian dolls.
The second Jackson Brodie novel (after Case Histories)- literary crime from the prizewinning, number-one bestselling author of Big Sky and Transcription.
Immerse yourself in the intricate, suspenseful world of One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson, the brilliant sequel to Case Histories. This captivating novel, penned by the award-winning and number-one bestselling author known for Big Sky and Transcription, weaves a compelling tapestry of crime, intertwining lives, and dark humour set against the vibrant backdrop of the Edinburgh Festival.
As the festival’s bustling crowds queue for a lunchtime show, they are shocked witnesses to a harrowing road-rage incident – a savage encounter that sends ripples through the lives of all present. Among the bystanders is Jackson Brodie, the novel's enigmatic protagonist. Previously an army officer, police inspector, and private detective, Brodie is suddenly thrust into the chaos, finding himself a prime suspect in a spiralling series of murky events.
With a body count that rises with relentless precision, Atkinson crafts a narrative where each character’s story is a piece of a larger puzzle, ingeniously constructed like Russian nesting dolls. Every individual's quest for love, money, redemption, or escape leads to unexpected self-discoveries, offering a poignant yet grimly humorous commentary on the human condition.
The Guardian praises One Good Turn as "an absolute joy to read," highlighting the pleasure derived from Atkinson's adept character development, her incisive, witty prose, and the novel’s vibrant energy. Her wry and unyielding characters navigate a masterfully plotted labyrinth of intersecting fates, creating an engrossing reading experience that lingers long after the final page.
Dive into One Good Turn and experience the brilliant fusion of literary mastery and crime fiction that has cemented Kate Atkinson as a leading voice in contemporary literature.

A joy to read, One Good Turn impresses with its wry, unvanquished characters and savvy prose. It balances humour with a darkening plot, offering a unique blend of emotional drama and thrilling mystery. Atkinson cleverly subverts the murder-mystery genre while delivering a story that remains both a good literary novel and an engaging holiday read.
