Death As Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal by Juan Luis Arsuaga and Juan José Millás is a captivating follow-up to their previously acclaimed collaboration. This thought-provoking book delves into the mysteries of death and eternity while exploring a range of compelling topics such as longevity, disease, ageing, natural selection, and survival. Through the lively and engaging dialogues between Arsuaga, a renowned palaeontologist, and Millás, an acclaimed writer, the reader is provided with a unique blend of science and literature.

The narrative begins with Arsuaga sharing profound insights on the biological aspects of death and the potential for immortality. He muses about the existence of a biological clock within our cells and the possibility of halting its progress to achieve eternal life. As this scientific exploration unfolds, Millás, who grapples with the notion of old age and mortality, offers a literary and humanistic perspective, bringing a deeply personal touch to the discourse. Their interactions, filled with humour and intellectual vigour, traverse the boundaries between modern science and poetic reflection.

Following the remarkable success of their previous book, Life As Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal, this new volume continues to enchant readers with its eloquent examination of life and death. The dynamic duo of Spanish literature takes readers on an illuminating journey through the intricacies of human existence, drawing connections between the evolutionary past and contemporary life. Along the way, they address fundamental questions about programmed death and the essence of survival, anchored by their signature wit and wisdom.

The book is a treasure trove of biological insights, natural history, and philosophical musings, all seamlessly intertwined. Arsuaga and Millás, representing the Sapiens and the Neanderthal, respectively, engage in sharp reflections that highlight how evolution has shaped not only the species but also individuals. Their sharp interplay creates an invigorating narrative that surprises and delights at every turn.

Death As Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal is imbued with the essence of life—humour, biology, and nature. It invites readers to ponder profound questions while basking in the charm of two fascinating characters whose dialogue brings a fresh perspective to our understanding of life and death.

Praise for Life As Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal:

Absorbing, amusing, and enlightening; a charming exploration not only of evolution, but of human enquiry and wonder.
   - Rebecca Wragg Sykes, author of Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art

Written with humour and lightly-worn learning, this book makes the familiar strange and the strange uncannily familiar; a fascinating journey into our shared prehistory via the shops, galleries, restaurants, playgrounds, and parks of a twenty-first century city.
   - Helen Gordon, author of Notes from Deep Time: A Journey Through Our Past and Future World

Millás is one of the writers with the most truth per square centimetre of a page.
   - Antonio Iturbe, What to Read

Both profound and entertaining, Death As Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal offers an unparalleled glimpse into the human condition through the eyes of two of Spain's most luminous minds. Whether you are a student of science, a lover of literature, or simply a seeker of life's enduring mysteries, this book is sure to leave an indelible mark.
