Description
A breathtaking reimagining of the classic themes of love, death, and memory by Spain's greatest living writer.
Every day, Maria Dolz stops for breakfast at the same café. And every day, she enjoys watching a handsome couple who follow the same routine. Then one day, they aren't there, and she feels obscurely bereft.
It is only later, when she comes across a newspaper photograph of the man, lying stabbed in the street, that she discovers who the couple are. Some time afterwards, when the woman returns to the café with her children, who are then collected by a different man, and Maria approaches her to offer her condolences, an entanglement begins which sheds new light on this apparently random, pointless death.
The Infatuations explores the mysterious nature of love, the unreliability of memory, and the risk of obsession, presented through the lens of an everyday routine turned tragically extraordinary.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Javier Marías's The Infatuations has been praised for its mesmerising and disturbing narrative, offering a deep meditation on love, life, and death. The novel is applauded for its unique form, cerebral plotting, and absorbing story, making it a haunting and elegant exploration of classical themes. It's described as both a murder mystery and a suspenseful meditation with a distinctive style.
