Resistance
As a family therapist, Nina is the ultimate listener. Yet this is of little use with her latest clients, the Agostinos, who have been mandated to see her after stealing a car and disappearing into the outback.
For support with the case, Nina meets with a supervising therapist, Erin. What they unearth in their sessions goes beyond the Agostino story into confronting personal territory for Nina. Meanwhile, despite her efforts, the Agostinos remain unwilling to speakβso how can Nina be sure that the two children are safe with their parents?
In the tradition of Rachel Cuskβs Outline trilogy, Resistance is an elegant, hypnotic novel of stories within stories. Examining the unfathomable mysteries within our families, it also questions how we retell our history, both personal and collective.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Jacinta Halloran's Resistance is lauded for its exploration of complex themes like mental health, family dynamics, and First Nations history, providing a deep dive into the human condition with its many complexities. Reviews praise it as thought-provoking and intimate, with some highlighting its layered storytelling and the way it meditates on storytelling itself. The novel is noted for its elegant prose and precise character depictions, weaving individual narratives into broader reflections on Australian identity and shared histories. It has been described as both insightful and compelling, challenging readers to reflect on their own stories and the influences that shape them.
