The world was too bright for Leo.

And too loud.

"I must be living on the wrong planet," Leo thought.

Leo struggles to make sense of the world. He doesn't understand the other children in his class, and they don't seem to understand him. But then one day, Leo meets Maya.

Maya is an octopus, and the more Leo learns about her, the more he thinks that perhaps he isn't alone in this world, after all.

Leo and the Octopus by Isabelle Marinov is a touching story about finding connections where you least expect them.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Leo and the Octopus is praised as an enchanting tale that captures the unique perspectives of an autistic child and an octopus, both perceived as somewhat alien yet possessing a shared knack for problem-solving. The story is noted for its sensitive and accurate depiction of autism, particularly in how Leo navigates his world and seeks connection through shared interests. Readers appreciate the imaginative way the narrative explores how the octopus’s colour-changing ability relates to emotions, highlighting Leo’s wish for a straightforward emotional code in human interactions.

She is a member of the SCBWI and a 2017/18 Children's Literature Fellow at Stony Brook University in Southampton, NY.
