Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

That Old Ace in the Hole by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx is a riveting novel that transports readers to the harsh, sprawling landscapes of the Texas panhandle. The story follows Bob Dollar, a young man recently hired as a scout for Global Pork Rind, a corporation aiming to establish vast hog farms in this unforgiving region. His mission is fraught with challenges, as he navigates the rugged terrain and encounters the stoic, uncompromising people who inhabit it.

Bob Dollar's assignment brings him face to face with a cast of memorable characters, each with their own strong ties to the land and a wary eye towards the encroaching industrialisation represented by Global Pork Rind. Among them is Freda Beautyrooms, the indomitable matriarch of a coveted ranch, and Ace Crouch, a windmiller fiercely opposed to the hog farms. As Bob becomes a part of the community, staying at La Von Fronk’s bunkhouse and helping out at Cy Frease’s Old Dog CafΓ©, he finds himself questioning his role and the broader implications of his work.

The novel is a rich tapestry of satire and social commentary, deftly exploring themes of global capitalism, environmental change, and personal integrity. Proulx's signature wit and profound sense of place shine through, painting a vivid picture of the vast, parched flatlands and the unique culture of the Texas panhandle.

A.N. Wilson of the Daily Telegraph praises the novel as "an absolute corker," noting its remarkable ability to function both as a serious critique of global capitalism and a personal comedy of "Dickensian dimensions." Alex Clark of the Guardian highlights Proulx’s exceptional talent in evoking place and landscape, stating, "she sets about drawing the vast distances and parched flatlands of Texas with almost immeasurable skill."

Critics have lauded the novel's multi-faceted approach: it is "amusing, intriguing and disturbing," according to Mark Sanderson of the Independent on Sunday, while the Daily Telegraph hails it as a "kind-hearted and intelligent novel." Adam Mars-Jones from the Observer commends Proulx for her exceptional observational skills, and Peter Kemp of the Sunday Times describes the book as "brilliantly written." The Scotsman adds that the novel is both "funny and heartfelt."

That Old Ace in the Hole is a masterful blend of humour, poignancy, and sharp social critique, showcasing Annie Proulx's unparalleled ability to weave compelling narratives that resonate deeply with readers. This is not just a story of one man's journey but a powerful exploration of the changing American West and the enduring spirit of its people.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
