Six Four

The million-selling Japanese crime sensation, now in paperback.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
Six Four by Hideo Yokoyama is a gripping psychological crime thriller that delves into the complexities of an unsolved kidnapping case and the convoluted world of police bureaucracy in Japan.

In January 1989, the parents of a seven-year-old Tokyo schoolgirl were plunged into a nightmare when their daughter was kidnapped. Though they complied with the kidnapper's demands, they never learned his identity and their daughter was never returned to them. The failure of this investigation left a nation indignant and incredulous, as the case, famously named Six Four, became a symbol of the police force's inadequacies.

For the next fourteen years, the Japanese public was subjected to endless apologies from the police. The echoes of this botched case haunted the community and eroded trust in law enforcement. The name Six Four was etched into the collective memory, a stark reminder of a system's monumental failure.

Fast forward to late 2002. Yoshinobu Mikami, the press officer recently transferred to the police's media relations department, is drawn back into this cold case. As he uncovers unsettling discrepancies and institutional inconsistencies, Mikami realises that the truth behind Six Four might be more complex and sinister than anyone had dared to imagine. Faced with bureaucratic obstacles, family strain, and personal torment, he perseveres, driven by a need for justice and closure.

Yokoyama masterfully blends an intricate plot with rich character development, delving into the moral ambiguities and human frailties within the structures of authority. Six Four goes beyond a typical crime novel, offering a profound commentary on the intersections of personal and professional duty, while keeping readers on the edge of their seats with its myriad twists and revelations.

With a sensational narrative and a deeply immersive atmosphere, Six Four is an extraordinary work that exemplifies the best of Japanese crime fiction, and it will leave a lasting impression long after the final page is turned.
