The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris is a harrowing yet uplifting tale of love and survival set against the backdrop of one of history's darkest periods. This internationally acclaimed novel is based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew who, in 1942, was forcibly transported to the notorious Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Given the inhumane task of tattooing identification numbers onto his fellow prisoners, Lale meets a terrified young girl named Gita Furmanova, who would come to indelibly mark his heart.

As Lale tattoos a number onto Gita’s arm, their bond forms amidst the horrific confines of the camp. Their love, forbidden and perilous, blossoms defiantly amidst death and desolation, offering a tender yet powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Lale's role offers him some privileges, and he uses these to provide sustenance and hope to both Gita and his fellow prisoners, all while risking his own life.

The novel intimately explores the nuances of life in Auschwitz, portraying the complex human emotions of fear, hope, and the relentless desire for freedom. Morris' meticulous research and sensitive storytelling illuminate the extraordinary capacity for love and compassion in the face of unspeakable cruelty.

The first book in Heather Morris's highly acclaimed series, The Tattooist of Auschwitz has now been adapted into a major Stan Original Series, bringing this unforgettable story to a broader audience. Loved by over 13 million readers worldwide, it stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is more than just a recounting of historical events; it is a celebration of love, courage, and humanity. This compelling narrative will resonate deeply with readers, leaving an indelible mark long after the final page is turned. Experience one of the most life-affirming and unforgettable stories of the Holocaust, told with grace and humanity by Heather Morris.

About the Author

Born in New Zealand, Heather Morris is passionate about stories of survival, resilience and hope. In 2003, while working in a large public hospital in Melbourne, Heather was introduced to an elderly gentleman who 'might just have a story worth telling'. The day she met Lale Sokolov changed both their lives. Lale's story formed the basis for The Tattooist of Auschwitz and the follow-up novel, Cilka's Journey. In 2021 she published the phenomenal conclusion to the Tattooist trilogy, Three Sisters, after being asked to tell the story of three Holocaust survivors who knew Lale from their time in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Together, her novels have sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. Her exceptional new novel, Sisters under the Rising Sun, was published in 2023 bringing another heart-wrenching true story to life with experiences of women in Japanese POW camps, and how they found bravery in sisterhood and hope to survive in music.
