When the Body Says No

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In When the Body Says No, Dr Gabor Maté delves into the intricate connection between mind and body, shedding light on how stress and suppressed emotions can manifest as serious medical conditions. With compelling case studies and personal stories, Maté draws from extensive scientific research and years of clinical experience to explore the profound effects of unmanaged stress and emotional repression on one's physical health. This enlightening book presents a compassionate and holistic view on medicine, focusing not just on treating symptoms but understanding the underlying causes of disease.

Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer's disease? Is there such a thing as a 'cancer personality'? These are some of the pivotal questions Dr Maté tackles in his groundbreaking work. By analysing an array of common diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and multiple sclerosis, he reveals how unaddressed emotional trauma and stress are often the unsung culprits behind these ailments.

One of the book’s standout features is the inclusion of dozens of case studies and anecdotes, including those of renowned personalities like baseball legend Lou Gehrig, former First Lady Betty Ford, and cycling champion Lance Armstrong. Through their stories, Maté illustrates 'The Seven A's of Healing' – essential principles for healing and preventing illness caused by hidden stress.

When the Body Says No is enriched with reviews from prominent figures. Bruce Lipton, PhD, author of The Biology of Belief, praises the book: “Gabor Maté, MD, skilfully blends recent advances in biomedicine with the personal stories of his patients to provide empowering insights into how deeply developmental experiences shape our health, behaviour, attitudes, and relationships. A must read.”

Naomi Klein, author of No Logo and The Shock Doctrine, lauds Maté's holistic approach, stating: “Gabor Maté's connections – between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political – are bold, wise and deeply moral. He is a healer to be cherished.”

The Edmonton Journal hails the book as “an enthralling exploration of the relationship between stress and disease ... Maté probes deeply into the life histories and psyches of his many patients ... What emerges is nothing short of a revelation ... When the Body Says No has the power to change medical thinking.”

This profound exploration into the mind-body connection is not just for medical professionals but for anyone interested in understanding the deeper roots of illness. It offers a revolutionary perspective on health that could change the way we view and treat diseases, making it a crucial read for those seeking a deeper understanding of their own bodies and emotional wellbeing.
