The King's Painter by Franny Moyle explores the life and work of Hans Holbein the Younger, chiefly celebrated for his beautiful and precisely realised portraiture. His subjects include Henry VIII, Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell, Anne of Cleves, Jane Seymour, and a host of Tudor lords and ladies he encountered during his time in England.
Beyond these familiar images, which define our perception of the Henrician court, Holbein was a protean genius: humanist, satirist, political propagandist, and contributor to book design history. His work as a religious artist and court painter is imbued with rich symbolism and allusion, engaging scholars through the ages.
Franny Moyle traces and analyses Holbein's extraordinary life set against a backdrop of political turbulence and cultural transformation. His art provides a subtle and endlessly refracting mirror to this remarkable era.
