DescriptionIn Tikanga, authors Francis and Kaiora Tipene delve deeply into the harmonious blend of traditional Māori values and contemporary living, offering readers a rare and insightful glimpse into their daily lives. This enlightening book paints a vivid picture of how the Tipenes incorporate the rich and profound aspects of te ao Māori into every facet of their existence.
Following the success of their bestselling book, Life as a Casketeer, this new work goes beyond their experiences in the funeral business, elaborating on how the principles of tikanga Māori—the customs and traditions passed down through generations—guide them in familial, professional, and personal spheres. Tikanga explores the essence of whānau (family), mahi (work), and manaakitanga (hospitality), illustrating how these values foster a fulfilling, connected, and joyful life.
Known for their warm hearts, grace, and humour, Francis and Kaiora, the beloved stars of the popular television series The Casketeers, reveal how they manage the intricate balance of parenting five sons, running three successful businesses, and starring in a TV show. Amidst all these activities, they demonstrate how adhering to tikanga Māori enriches their lives and fortifies their sense of community and belonging.
The Tipenes share personal anecdotes, insightful reflections, and practical advice that underscore the importance of tradition in building resilience and sustaining happiness. Through their stories, readers learn how the principles of respect, care, and responsibility toward one’s family, community, and heritage are not just abstract ideals but living practices that can transform everyday life.
Tikanga is not just a book about cultural practices; it is a heartfelt invitation to explore how embracing tradition can lead to a more meaningful and enriched existence. Whether you are familiar with Māori culture or discovering it for the first time, this book offers invaluable lessons and inspiration for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of what it means to live a life grounded in timeless values.
