Have you ever wondered what would happen if some of the strangest, most outlandish questions you could imagine were answered with scientific rigour? In What If?, Randall Munroe, the creator of the immensely popular webcomic xkcd, tackles some of the most bizarre and improbable questions posed by his readers, providing answers that are as entertaining as they are enlightening.

Millions of fans flock to xkcd.com each week for Munroe’s unique blend of wit and wisdom. They also submit their wildest queries, seeking his expert elucidation. Among these seemingly absurd questions are: How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? When (if ever) did the sun set on the British Empire? When will Facebook have more profiles of deceased users than living ones? How many humans would a T-Rex rampaging through New York need to eat each day?

In his pursuit of answers, Munroe does not shy away from meticulous research and complex calculations. He runs computer simulations, dives into declassified military research memos, solves intricate differential equations, and consults with nuclear reactor operators to provide responses that are both scientifically sound and humorously presented. His answers often involve elaborate explanations accompanied by his distinctive stick-figure comics, shedding light on the scenarios in a way that is both accessible and engaging.

What If? goes beyond merely satisfying curiosity; it offers readers a chance to explore the limits of scientific understanding and human ingenuity. Munroe's writing showcases his remarkable ability to make complex topics approachable and amusing, often concluding with scenarios that foresee the complete obliteration of humanity or at least a significant explosion. This book is a delightful exploration of the intersection between science, creativity, and humour that will captivate anyone with a penchant for the quirky and wonderful.
