Das Umweltbewusstsein wird dabei nicht nur als gesellschaftliche Haltung zur Klimakrise oder zu Schadstoffemissionen verstanden, sondern vielmehr als vorauszusetzendes Wissen um die globale Gefährdung unserer Umwelt – letztlich unseres Planeten. Während seit den 1980er-Jahren Umfragen belegen, dass Umweltfragen ein Kernanliegen der deutschen Bevölkerung sind, bleibt die Entwicklung des Umweltbewusstseins davor weitgehend unerforscht. Das Buch schließt diese Lücke und zeichnet nach, wie sich das Verhältnis von Gesellschaft und Natur im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert gewandelt hat.

Auf der Basis einer quantitativen Metadatenanalyse der deutschen Publikationslandschaft, ergänzt durch qualitative Fallstudien aus der Umweltgeschichte und Literaturwissenschaft, entsteht ein transdisziplinärer Überblick über die zentralen Konzepte des Anthropozäns. Denn letzteres versteht sich neben seinen geologischen, erdsystemwissenschaftlichen, soziologischen und philosophischen Implikationen als Sammelbegriff für das Bewusstwerden der Menschheit über ihre eigene Transformationskraft. Das Umweltbewusstsein ist somit die zentrale Kenngröße des Anthropozäns. Die Studie verbindet geistes- und naturwissenschaftliche Ansätze mit Methoden der Digital Humanities – und eröffnet so einen neuen Zugang zum Verständnis der ökologischen Moderne.
