Foster by Claire Keegan is a masterful novella, unfolding during a scorching summer in rural Ireland. The poignant narrative follows a young girl who is sent to live with foster parents on a farm, uncertain of when—or if—she will return to her family. As she adjusts to the rhythms of her new life, she finds a warmth and kindness that was previously missing. Under the care of these strangers, the girl begins to flourish, experiencing a sense of security and affection that rekindles her spirit.

However, as the days pass and she grows more enmeshed in the life of her foster family, she comes to the realisation that this newfound paradise holds its own set of secrets. The fragility of her situation becomes evident, casting a shadow over her idyllic existence. Keegan's exquisite prose captures the complexities of human relationships and the profound impact of compassion and care.

Praise for Foster is abundant:

'A real jewel.' Irish Independent
'A small miracle.' Sunday Times
'A thing of finely honed beauty.' Guardian
'Thrilling.' Richard Ford
'As good as Chekhov.' David Mitchell

From the Booker Prize-shortlisted author of Small Things Like These, Claire Keegan's Foster has been celebrated for its remarkable emotional depth and eloquent simplicity.

'Foster confirms Claire Keegan's talent. She creates luminous effects with spare material, so every line seems to be a lesson in the perfect deployment of both style and emotion' - Hilary Mantel
