Liberty against the Law
A classic study of popular resistance to the momentous changes of seventeenth-century England
A classic study of popular resistance to the momentous changes of seventeenth-century England
In this, the last book published during his lifetime, renowned historian of the English Revolution Christopher Hill uses the literary culture of the seventeenth century to explore the immense social changes of the period, as well as the expressions of liberty, the law and the hero-worship of the outlaw defiance.
As well as chapters on gypsies and vagabonds, Hill analyses class, religion, and the shift away from the importance of the church after the Reformation.
Liberty against the Law is a late classic of Hillβs work and essential reading for anyone interested in the history and politics of the seventeenth century.

In Liberty against the Law, Christopher Hill explores the concept of dissent and rebellion against the social and legal norms of 17th-century England. The book highlights how a minority of the population resisted laws through actions like poaching and piracy, finding inspiration in cultures and literature that celebrated such resistance. Hill critiques the traditional narrative of English history by examining figures and movements that challenged authority, revealing a persistent culture of opposition hidden amidst dominant historical progressions.

As a young man he witnessed the growth of the Nazi party firsthand during a prolonged holiday in Germany, an experience he later said contributed to the radicalisation of his politics. His celebrated and influential works includeΒ Intellectual Origins of the English Revolution,Β The World Turned Upside Down, andΒ A Turbulent, Seditious and Fractious People: John Bunyan and His Church.
