The New Friend by Charlotte Zolotow is praised for its emotional honesty in depicting a common childhood experience of abruptly losing a close friendship. The updated illustrations provide a vintage charm, complementing a hopeful story that resonates with many readers while avoiding overly sentimental conclusions.
