About the Author

Award-winning author, Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Specialist Teacher, Dr. Betty Rudd, currently works in UK and Cyprus; she is a Doctoral Supervisor and Doctoral Examiner for British universities, a Director of Studies for doctoral students in Counselling Psychology at Regent's College, an Assessor and Co-ordinating Supervisor for trainees on the BPS QCoP Independent Route, freelance author and inventor of games for facilitating mental wellness. She contributed to the government-endorsed document 'Every Child Matters'. The BPS name her as an expert in emotional literacy and non-verbal communication. Since the 1960s, Betty has worked with children, teenagers and adults. She retired as the BPS DCoP Press Officer (2003), as the BPS DCoP SCC Chair, and as an Ordinary Member of the BPS DCoP Committee (2004). Since finishing her post as Senior Lecturer at UEL, she has taken an international position, written a text book as a guide for counselling, psychotherapy and counselling psychology students ('Introducing Psychopathology' - publication date: November 2013) and created a board game ('Rainbow') for developing social and personal skills. 'Who's Who in Research', 'Who's Who in Health' and 'Who's Who in the World' list Dr. Betty Rudd for her outstanding contributions in her field of endeavour. She is married, has three grandchildren and is learning to knit triple-quick! Maria Rudd is a primary school teacher who lives and works in south-east London. She incorporates mindfulness-based techniques into her teaching practice and has found it particularly useful in PSHE as a way of building emotional literacy. Prior to training as a teacher, Maria studied musical theatre and acting where she became interested in ways of keeping performances 'fresh' by being in the 'moment'. As a qualified watersports instructor, Maria has found mindfulness naturally occurs when you are in 'flow', for example when windsurfing. She hopes that others can experience the benefits of mindfulness through the use of these cards. Matthew Wilson is an Educational Psychologist (EP) who lives and works in London, UK. Before training as an EP, he spent 15 years supporting children and young people in educational and community-based settings in the UK, New Zealand and Japan. Matthew's doctoral thesis focused on the met/unmet psychological needs of permanently excluded secondary-age children and young people. His other academic and practice-based interests include: the application of mindfulness-based approaches in educational settings; creating and maintaining autonomy-supportive learning environments; the use of solution-focused thinking in both consultation and therapeutic intervention work; and the impact of psychiatric and psychological labelling on the self-concept and social identity of the individual. Matthew also holds a personal interest in the application of mindfulness to sport, in particular long distance running and rock climbing.
