The Guynd by Belinda Rathbone is a heartwarming tale of a woman from New England who falls for a charming Scottish landowner, only to find herself in a complex relationship with his family's 400-year-old ancestral estate. This story beautifully intertwines the elements of a house, a place, and a marriage.

The word "Guynd" rhymes with "wind" and is Gaelic for "a high, marshy place." It is the setting for Rathbone's memoir, following her unexpected marriage and subsequent move to pastoral Scotland. Here, she navigates life in a grand yet dilapidated mansion, still bearing the scars of two world wars. The story captures her interactions with an overgrown landscape, a neglected garden, challenging tenants, local nobility, traditional Scottish rituals, and a husband resistant to change.

Rathbone oscillates between enchantment and near despair as she delves into family and local history, striving to understand her new environment and the generational ties that bind. As noted by The New York Times, "The book lifts and excels; Rathbone nails down a little bit of the Scottish soul in all its stark splendour."

This is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys a fish-out-of-water romance and a touching narrative of finding and redefining home.
