Relentless

Relentless by Amanda Deed tells the story of Lord Derryk and the foundling Renata, whom he and King Eirik discovered seventeen years ago. Once a child, Renata is now grown, and Derryk is ready to court and marry her. However, Renata struggles with feelings of not belonging and being unworthy of Derryk’s love. In her quest to be the perfect wife, she exhausts herself.

When temptation arrives in the form of Iollan, a professed friend, Renata succumbs to his seductive lies and betrays Derryk, breaking his heart. Despite this, Derryk repeatedly forgives her and attempts to bring her back, but Renata doubts that Derryk can truly forgive or love her again. Her continued unfaithfulness leads to Derryk signing a divorce.

Separated from Derryk’s protection, Renata comes to realise the truth about Iollan. At her lowest point and desperate, she returns to Eorden seeking help, where she is offered a humble dwelling on the edge of the lands with only basic sustenance.

Meanwhile, Derryk has disappeared, and an army threatens the kingdom. Iollan locates Renata’s hiding place and accuses her of numerous crimes, including murder. Derryk’s servants are distraught, unsure of how to respond.

The king arrives in time for Renata's trial, culminating in a death sentence. At the final moment, Derryk emerges from the crowd and offers to take her punishment. What ensues is an unexpected turn of events during the public hanging, as Derryk’s enduring love conquers all adversaries, achieving a heartfelt reconciliation and winning Renata’s heart forever.
