Celts, The - Search for a Civilisation by Alice Roberts is a captivating exploration into the enigmatic world of the Celts, a society that thrived across Europe long before the rise of the Roman Empire. Drawing readers into a vivid narrative, Roberts combines her expertise in anthropology and history to uncover the hidden treasures and stories of this ancient civilisation.

We are often well-informed about the grandeur and scope of the Roman Empire, with its monumental architecture and extensive written records. In contrast, the Celts, despite their significant influence, have been largely overshadowed in historical texts. They were a proud and advanced people, known for their fierce warriors, chariots, iron weaponry, intricate jewellery, elaborate tattoos, and unique rituals. For centuries, they dominated large swathes of Europe, their territories even encroaching upon the edges of Roman lands. Yet, much of their history remains obscured, as they did not leave behind written records to chronicle their deeds.

In Celts, The - Search for a Civilisation, Roberts embarks on an extensive journey across Europe, from the bogs of Denmark to the sunlit shores of Italy, and from the rugged landscapes of Portugal to the ancient ruins of Turkey. Her quest is to bring to light the true origins of the Celts, their way of life, their remarkable achievements, and the legacy that continues to influence the modern world.

The book leverages cutting-edge linguistic research, recent archaeological discoveries, and the latest advancements in genetic studies to paint a comprehensive picture of Celtic society. Roberts' narrative dispels many common misconceptions, revealing how the Celts managed to flourish and even challenge the supremacy of Rome during their height.

Accompanying a major BBC series presented by Alice Roberts and Neil Oliver, and broadcast in October 2015, Celts, The - Search for a Civilisation serves as both a scholarly resource and an accessible read for anyone interested in ancient civilisations. Through detailed investigations and engaging storytelling, Roberts ensures that the accomplishments and culture of the Celts receive the recognition they have long deserved.

This book is an essential read for history enthusiasts, offering deep insights into the spirited and resilient people who shaped a significant part of Europe's ancient past.
