The new book by Sunday Times bestselling author of Ancestors and Buried - the final instalment in Professor Alice Roberts' acclaimed trilogy.

In her latest offering, Professor Alice Roberts takes readers on an extraordinary journey through the crypts and graves of medieval Britain, spanning from the 10th to the 16th century. In Crypt, Roberts uncovers the stories of men, women, and children whose lives were defined by the tumultuous eras they inhabited. This book is not for the faint-hearted; it delves deep into the grim realities of the past, shedding light on the diseases, injuries, and the profound suffering of our ancestors. Through meticulous archaeological examination, Roberts brings to life the untold tales buried beneath centuries of history.

Among the harrowing narratives, readers will encounter episodes of severe brutality, where vile hate speech incited violence against ethnic minorities. The book vividly portrays the devastation brought on by relentless epidemics that swept through medieval Europe, causing untold misery and death. The ongoing conflict between Church and State for the control of England’s soul is scrutinised, revealing how this struggle led to the creation and subsequent destruction of the country's most famous tomb.

In a compelling final chapter, Professor Roberts introduces a singular individual whose deeply marked bones tell the story of a life ravaged by chronic, debilitating disease. Intriguingly, there’s a tantalising hint that this person’s name may be recoverable from historical records, offering the chance to put a name to the anonymous dead.

Beautifully written, vividly illustrated, and underpinned by rigorous research, Crypt is an unforgettable exploration of medieval Britain. Roberts’ expert storytelling and unparalleled insights offer a fresh, thought-provoking perspective on our collective past, culminating in a stunning and unexpected portrait of historical Britain.
