Life Is Not Useful

Indigenous leader and activist Ailton Krenak reminds us that we must awaken from the comatose senselessness we have been immersed in since the beginning of the modern colonial project, where order, progress, development, consumerism, and capitalism have taken over our entire existence, leaving us only very partially alive, and, in fact, almost dead.
To awaken from the coma of modernity is, for Krenak, to awaken to the possibility of becoming attuned to βthe cosmic sense of life.β He points out that the COVID-19 pandemic affects all so-called βhumanβ lives and that the time is ripe for us all to reflect on and undo the exclusivity and distinction that have characterized the concept of humanity throughout Western modernity.
Life Is Not Useful challenges readers to reconsider these ingrained notions and invites us to envision a more interconnected and meaningful existence.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Chosen by Mongabay as one of 10 notable books on conservation and the environment in 2023. Mongabay praises Krenak's call to shift away from humanityβs detachment from nature and profit-driven exploitation, highlighting his vision of interconnected reliance on all life on the planet. Emanuele Coccia, author of Metamorphoses, recognises Krenak as a unique contemporary voice who transforms crisis into opportunity, emphasising our shared flesh with the Earth and the need to view the planet not as a battleground of cultures but as a place for shared dreams with all living beings.
