Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In 1900, Swedish design reformer and social theorist Ellen Key published The Century of the Child, presaging the coming century as a period of intensified focus and progressive thinking around the rights, development, and wellbeing of children.

Taking inspiration from Key—and looking back through the twentieth century—this volume, published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, examines individual and collective visions for the material world of children, from utopian dreams for the 'citizens of the future' to the dark realities of political conflict and exploitation.

Surveying more than one hundred years of school architecture, clothing, toys, children's hospitals, nurseries, furniture, posters, animation and books, this richly illustrated catalogue illuminates how progressive design has enhanced the physical, intellectual and emotional development of children and, conversely, how models of children's play have informed experimental aesthetics and imaginative design thinking.

Engendering, in the process, reappraisals of some of the iconic names in twentieth-century design and enriching the unfolding narrative of modern design with other, less familiar figures.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Curator Juliet Kinchin notes the enduring vision of children as the foundation for shaping society, with design evolving through industrialization and urbanisation. Steven Heller of The Atlantic highlights how both adults and children have co-created new worlds through revolutionary toys like Lego and the Rubik's Cube, along with imaginative educational environments. The book captures how design and childhood are fundamental to modern culture and creativity, offering a profound look at the transformative power of play and progressive design.

In its place, Broadacre was to be a "Usonian" synthesis, an unprecedented landscape unsullied by convention or history, consisting simply of "architecture and acreage."...

When Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017—revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was "fresh, unpretentious and lean" (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)—critics lauded it as "a revelation" (Susan Chira, New York Times) and "a cultural landmark" (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English.
