Maori Myth and Legend by A. W. Reed is an enchanting exploration into the rich and vibrant world of Maori folklore. This classic, bestselling book offers an extensive collection of some of the most significant and beloved tales from Maori tradition, all meticulously retold for the general reader. It provides a captivating journey through a world where the divine and the human coexist in stories of creation, adventures, and cosmic battles.

The book begins with the Maori creation myth, detailing how the world came into existence and how life, death, and knowledge were born. Readers will encounter the great god Tฤne, revered for separating Earth and Sky to bring light into the world. The exploits of the demi-god Mฤui are also vividly narrated, including the tale of how he tamed the sun to slow its passage across the sky, a feat that holds immense significance in Maori legend.

As the stories unfold, the reader is introduced to a diverse cast of characters, including the woman on the moon, who represents an ancient love story, and various mythical beasts like the taniwha (monsters) and patupaiarehe (fairies). The tales also bring to life wondrous birds and animate mountains, each with its own unique story that reflects the Maoriโ€™s deep connection to the natural world.

Maori Myth and Legend is not just a collection of stories but a window into the soul of Maori culture. Reedโ€™s writing makes these ancient tales accessible and engaging to modern readers, preserving the essence of the oral traditions they originated from. The bookโ€™s narratives are enriched with cultural context, providing insights into the values, beliefs, and practices that have shaped the Maori way of life for centuries.

For anyone interested in mythology, anthropology, or the cultural history of New Zealand, Maori Myth and Legend is an indispensable resource. It is a beautifully crafted book that brings to life the wisdom and wonder of Maori heritage, capturing the imagination and enriching the understanding of readers around the world.
