The Story to Screen Report

Welcome to this week's Story to Screen Report, where Sacha rounds up the biggest book-to-screen news from around the world.

From exciting casting announcements and first trailer reveals to brand new adaptations and behind-the-scenes drama, there's plenty happening in the world of page-to-screen storytelling. Here's everything you need to know, including a fresh look at 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping', the first trailer for 'The Love Hypothesis', major Netflix casting news and more.

Tomi Adeyemi steps away from film adaptation

Just months before the highly anticipated 'Children of Blood and Bone' film arrives in cinemas, author Tomi Adeyemi has revealed she is officially distancing herself from the adaptation.

In a series of emotional social media posts, Adeyemi said she has endured years of "hurt and attacks behind the scenes" and confirmed she will not watch or promote the film, despite previously serving as a co-writer and executive producer. The fantasy adaptation, starring Thuso Mbedu, Viola Davis, Idris Elba and Amandla Stenberg, is still set for release in January 2027.

First trailer arrives for 'The Love Hypothesis'

Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for its adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's bestselling romance 'The Love Hypothesis', giving fans their first proper look at Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen. The trailer recreates several of the novel's most iconic fake dating moments, with the film set to premiere on Prime Video on 23 September.

Early fan reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the chemistry between the two leads and how closely the adaptation appears to follow the beloved book.

New promo puts Haymitch in the spotlight

Lionsgate has released a new featurette for 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping', giving fans their best look yet at Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy.

Released to mark Haymitch's birthday and Reaping Day, the promo explores the character's journey into the 50th Hunger Games and the rebellious spirit that shapes the mentor fans first met in the original films. The highly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel arrives in cinemas on 20 November.

‘Harry Potter’ season 2 faces delays to recast Ginny Weasley

Production on season two of HBO's 'Harry Potter' series has been delayed as the studio makes recasting Ginny Weasley a top priority following Gracie Cochrane's departure after season one.

HBO has launched a nationwide casting search across the UK, signalling it is taking its time to find the right actress before cameras roll on 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'. The move highlights just how important Ginny's role becomes as the series progresses, with the studio determined to get the casting right.

New series explores the woman behind 'Anne of Green Gables'

A new limited drama series, Lucy Maud, is in development, telling the remarkable life story of 'Anne of Green Gables' author Lucy Maud Montgomery. The series will star Megan Follows, who famously played Anne Shirley in the 1985 adaptation, alongside 'Anne with an E' star Amybeth McNulty, bringing together two generations of Anne actresses to celebrate the beloved author's life and legacy.

Netflix casts its ‘Myron Bolitar’ leads

Netflix has found the stars of its long-awaited adaptation of Harlan Coben's 'Myron Bolitar' series, with Colin Woodell taking on the title role alongside KJ Apa as Win Lockwood and Diane Guerrero as Esperanza Diaz.

The crime drama follows a former basketball star turned sports agent whose clients often pull him into dangerous mysteries, blackmail and murder. The series comes from acclaimed producer David E. Kelley and marks the latest in Netflix's hugely successful partnership with Harlan Coben, following hits including 'Fool Me Once', 'The Stranger' and 'I Will Find You'.

Julia Garner to star in new Apple TV true crime series

Julia Garner has signed on to lead Apple TV+'s new limited series 'Guilty Creatures', based on Mikita Brottman's true crime book of the same name. The series tells the shocking true story of the 2000 murder of Mike Williams, whose disappearance during a duck hunting trip unravelled into a decades-long investigation involving betrayal, murder and a web of lies. Craig Gillespie ('I, Tonya', 'Cruella') is set to direct, adding another high-profile book adaptation to Apple TV+'s growing slate.

'The Gatekeeper' heads to the big screen

James Byrne's bestselling thriller 'The Gatekeeper' is being adapted into a feature film, with Oscar-nominated writer Matthew Michael Carnahan ('World War Z', 'Dark Waters') set to write and direct.

The action thriller follows former military "gatekeeper" Dez Limerick, whose unique skills draw him into a deadly conspiracy after he foils a kidnapping attempt. The project is being introduced to buyers at the Cannes market, marking another major page-to-screen adaptation for thriller fans.
