In 1945, he transformed this theoretical framework into the first design for a digital computer, heralding the dawn of the digital age. Turing's pioneering ideas continued to advance, shaping early thoughts on Artificial Intelligence and setting the stage for future technological development.
Despite his extraordinary contributions, Turing's life was marred by personal tragedy and societal prejudice. In 1952, his homosexuality, considered a criminal offence at the time, led to his prosecution and subjected him to abhorrent treatment. This humiliating experience took a severe toll on Turing, culminating in his tragic suicide in 1954 at the age of 41.

Andrew Hodges is Tutor in Mathematics at Wadham College, Oxford University. His classic text of 1983, since translated into several languages, created a new kind of biography, with mathematics, science, computing, war history, philosophy and gay liberation woven into a single personal narrative.
