Book Hero thinking about your next read

After returning from a trip to Brunei, Anthony Burgess, initially believing he has only a year to live, begins to write - novels, film scripts, television series, articles.

Second volume of Anthony Burgess's autobiography

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Taking up where Little Wilson and Big God left off, You've Had Your Time is the second volume of Anthony Burgess's autobiography. It begins in 1959, with the author's return from Brunei, and the start of a long and prolific writing career, and ends, somewhat arbitrarily, in 1982, with the centenary celebrations of the birth of James Joyce, which prompt Burgess to certain conclusions about the relationship between literature and life.

Full of extraordinary vignettes (Borges and Burgess conducting a conversation in Anglo-Saxon, for example), as rich, varied and hectic as the nomadic literary life it describes, this is the astonishingly frank autobiography of an extraordinary literary genius. Rarely, if ever, has a writer exposed his inner life so completely and rarely has a writer's life been described - by anyone - with such vigour, polymathic humour and linguistic verve.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Critics praise the autobiography for its vividness, humour, and ceaseless energy. The Sunday Express calls it "extraordinarily lively" and "gutsy fun," while the Observer highlights its unique glimpse into the literary world and Burgess's honest, compelling character. The Independent finds it exhilarating and richly instructive, and the Guardian notes its novelistic quality, lauding it as among Burgess's best works.

  • 1985
In characteristically daring style, Anthony Burgess combines two responses to Orwell's 1984 in one book. The first is a sharp analysis: through dialogues, parodies, and essays, Burgess sheds new light on what he called 'an apocalyptic codex of our worst fears', creating a critique that is literature in its own right. Part two is Burgess' own dystopic vision, written in...
