Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Wolfgang Tillmans. Saturated Light presents nearly three decades of the artist's innovative Silver series, showcasing abstract photographic works that challenge and enlarge the boundaries of photographic representation. This comprehensive volume features images of the Silver pieces both as standalone artworks and within notable installations, including exhibitions at K21 DΓΌsseldorf, Tate Britain, the Venice Biennial, and WIELS Brussels. An insightful essay by Tom Holert explores the philosophical and aesthetic dimensions of Tillmans's work, while a detailed conversation with photo engineer Klaus Pollmeier reveals the technical intricacies and serendipitous elements behind the images.

An extensive artist’s book which brings together a thirty year series of abstract photography

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

For almost thirty years, Wolfgang Tillmans has been creating new pictorial worlds of abstract photography with his Silver works, which compellingly expand the boundaries and representability of photographic processes.

Brought together for the first time in one opulent artist's book, Tillmans describes the pictures as "stained, impure, bright, unstable, exhausted, fugitive, smear, shimmer, as solid colours". In addition to the pictures, Tillmans also shows images of the Silver works in exhibition settings: as elements of installations, for example at K21 in DΓΌsseldorf in 2013, or as pure Silver installations like those at Tate Britain in 2003, the Venice Biennial in 2009, or, most recently in 2020, at WIELS in Brussels.

An essay by art theorist Tom Holert discusses the philosophical, aesthetic, and material questions that Tillmans's Silver works pose on the one hand, while on the other hand the thought-provoking pictorial process sets this in the room. A conversation between the artist and photo engineer Klaus Pollmeier delves into the innumerable photo-technical details, observations, and intentional as well as unintentional accidents that are at work in the photographs.

About the Author

Wolfgang Tillmans is one of the most influential artists of his generation, is known for pushing the limits of photography and image-making. His ambition as an artist is nothing less than to capture the world we live in. Weaving its way across the wealth of media and the variety of his subjects, the notion at the core of Tillmans's work is that of visibility. When does something become perceptible? What is the relationship between what we perceive and what we know? What impact do new technologies have on how we see the world? These questions reveal the political reach of Tillmans's work. Since his first images, which bore witness to the new social and cultural paradigms brought into being by a generation marked by the AIDS crisis and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Tillmans has always shown a strong political consciousness. For several years now, his political commitment has ventured beyond the practice of art and into social activism and the defense of democracy and minority rights via his foundation, Between Bridges, and a number of pro-EU campaigns that he initiated. Tom Holert is an art historian, writer, curator and artist. A former editor of Texte zur Kunst and Spex, he currently lives and works in Berlin. Klaus Pollmeier a photographic engineer graduate teaches photography at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau and works as a freelance photo conservator.
