Walter Sickert explores the life and impact of one of the most influential artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As an apprentice of Whistler and a close associate of Degas, Sickert engaged deeply with the French art scene of his time, and in turn, influenced numerous British painters up to the present day.

This book illustrates how Sickert transformed how everyday life was represented, using innovative approaches to subject matter, radical compositions, and the evocation of the materiality of existence in paint. It delves into the evolution of his work—from an impressionistic style in the 1880s to a pioneering use of photography in the 1930s—and examines how he repeatedly returned to certain locations and subjects, including his insightful self-portraits.

Sickert's imagination was inspired by news and current events, such as the Camden Town Murders and newspaper photography, as well as by popular culture—music halls, the stage, the burgeoning cinema industry, and rising celebrity culture.
